How to read NIRF rankings before you shortlist

CollegeNaksha Editorial · 2026-09-10

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is published every year by the Ministry of Education. It ranks institutions across India, both overall and within categories such as Engineering, Management, Medical, Pharmacy and Law.

The five parameter groups

  • Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) covers faculty strength, student intake and financial resources.
  • Research & Professional Practice (RP) looks at publications, citations and patents.
  • Graduation Outcomes (GO) tracks results, placements and higher studies.
  • Outreach & Inclusivity (OI) measures regional and gender diversity and support for disadvantaged students.
  • Perception (PR) reflects how peers and employers view the institution.

Ranks and rank bands

Each category publishes a numbered list. In several categories, institutions beyond the numbered list are grouped into bands such as 101-150. A band tells you the range, not an exact position, so CollegeNaksha never converts a band into a precise rank.

How CollegeNaksha shows an Uttarakhand list

CollegeNaksha keeps the national rank and orders Uttarakhand institutions by it. When you see #2 in Uttarakhand · NIRF #43, the second number is the official one.

Rankings are one input. Course fit, fees, location and campus life matter just as much.
